(needed for HP-UX version 5.0 only) How to auto start HP Technical Basic To have the OS automatically start up BASIC at power on a special file called 'Autost' must to be created (e.g. with 'vi') and saved in the same disc that contains the BASIC interpreter. The Autost file may contain additional instructions for the OS, such as loading of specific programs or drivers. In particular, if HP-UX version 1.0.0 is being used, the OS Real Time Extension package needs to be loaded before bringing BASIC up. The following are examples of Autost files for both versions of the OS: Autost (Version 1.0.0) /rom/scan_discs - scan for drives connected to IPC prep_sys > /dev/null - fixes disc problem (version 1.0.0) load_rt > /dev/null - loads realtime extensions bas_start & basic - starts up BASIC Autost (Version 5.0) bas_start first_prog & basic - starts up BASIC and runs 'first_prog' Please note that first_prog must be a STOREd Basic program and that if you do not include a program name after 'bas_start' and before the '&' then Basic will be brought up and left in calculator mode. If you put an '&' after basic then PAM will be brought up as well as Basic, if not then PAM will not be brought up and the Autost process will contiue to execute until Basic is halted. Note that this will require some memory. Manual Updates on Technical Basic Please be aware of the following exceptions of ROM BASIC version 5.0 and disc BASIC 5.0. 1 While you can enter the character code 255 by using the string ~255, the character will be displayed or printed as a comma when it is listed. For example: 10 A$="A~255B" This statement will be listed as: 10 A$="A,B" When the program is run, the value assigned to A$ remains 255. Because the character 255 is listed as a comma, do not edit the line containing character 255 without changing the comma back to ~255. 2 The REPLACEVAR command requires that the program be deallocated in order to replace variable names. A program is allocated after the INIT or RUN commands have been executed, and deallocated whenever the program is loaded or edited (the DIRECTORY command shows the current status). If the REPLACEVAR command is used on an allocated program the replacement won't take place, instead the program will be deallocated. A second execution of the same command will carry out the replacement.
