The files marked with an asterisk are required to run the program. The others are used if they are present. Note: file names that begin with a period (".") are by convention "hidden", and are not normally displayed to the user. file name purpose --------- ------- * MemoMaker MemoMaker text editor program startup.fmt default format file memo.tpl example template file README this file * .Memo.msg program messages and keylabels .Memo.hlp program help screens .Memobase.fnt current font for normal text .Memobold.fnt current font for bold text .Memobase.6x8 optional 6x8 font for normal text .Memobold.6x8 optional 6x8 font for bold text .Memobase.7x11 optional 7x11 font for normal text .Memobold.7x11 optional 7x11 font for bold text Install installation program .MemoMaker.ins installation file About HP-Windows ---------------- MemoMaker takes full advantage of systems that support HP-Windows. You can move your MemoMaker window anywhere on the screen and stretch it to any convenient size. If the MemoMaker window is narrower than 80 columns, you can scroll the infomation sideways to allow editing the full 80 columns of text. MemoMaker automatically scrolls the information in the window once the cursor reaches the left or right edge of the window. About HP-Mouse ------------- MemoMaker together with an HP-Mouse makes text selection easy. To move the cursor, use your HP-Mouse to move the "sprite" on the screen. With the sprite in the desired location, press the left mouse button ("select"). You can also "drag" the cursor along by holding down the left button while moving the sprite. This is especially useful while selecting a region of text. An alternative to pressing the function keys on the keyboard is to move the sprite to the appropriate function key label at the bottom of the screen and press the left ("select") button. Pressing the right mouse button ("menu") when the sprite is within the MemoMaker window brings up a set of special menu labels that allow you to easily move through your document without taking your hand off of the mouse. To restore the normal menu labels, just press the right button again. About HP-Touch ------------- MemoMaker also makes text selection easy on systems that support HP-Touch. To move the cursor, simply touch the desired location. by touching that location. You can also "drag" the cursor along by holding your finger against the screen as you move your finger. This is especially useful while selecting a region of text. An alternative to pressing the function keys on the keyboard is to touch the appropriate function key label at the bottom of the screen. About Font Files on the Integral PC ----------------------------------- On the Integral PC, MemoMaker reads its fonts from disc files when the program first starts up. The normal or "base" font is in the file ".Memobase.fnt". The bold font is in the file "Memobold.fnt". If neither of these files are found, MemoMaker uses the system font to display both normal and bold text. If only the base font is found, MemoMaker uses the base font to display both normal and bold text. Two sets of fonts are provided with the program. One is a 6x8 dot font, and the other is a 7x11 dot font. The 6x8 font allows you to see all 80 columns and about 25 lines of your file at a time. The 7x11 font allows you to see upto 72 columns and about 16 lines of your file at a time. Since MemoMaker supports sideways scrolling withing a window, you can easily view the same amount of information as with the smaller font. We find the larger font easier on the eyes during longer editing sessions. About Typing Control Characters ------------------------------- MemoMaker allows you to embed "control characters" in your file. Certain sequences of control characters sent to a printer, for example, allow you to take advantage of special features of that printer. Refer to the user's guide for each printer for the control characters understood by that printer and their meaning. You can embed control characters in a MemoMaker file. Control characters are treated specially by MemoMaker. To enter a control character into your file, first press the [ESC] key on the keyboard, then enter the control character by depressing the [CNTRL] key and the character key at the same time. For example, to embed a "tab" character (control-I), press the [ESC] key, then the [CNTRL] and [I] keys. The tab character is shown as an "I" in reverse video on your display. Note: To embed the characters control-S and control-Q in your file, you may need to disable XON/XOFF protocol in BOTH your terminal and datacomm card. To disable XON/XOFF protocol in your datacomm card, you can type the UNIX commands stty -ixon stty -ixoff before running MemoMaker. Certain terminals may loose characters with XON/XOFF protocol disabled. About Installing MemoMaker -------------------------- You can run MemoMaker directly from the application disc. However, we recommend that you make a working copy of the disc and keep the application disc in a safe place in case your working copy becomes lost or damaged. You can make a working copy of the release disc onto a floppy or a hard disc by running the program Install. Install prompts you for the name of the application, the source directory and the destination directory. You have a choice of four installation options for MemoMaker. The first option installs the MemoMaker program and its support files. The next two options are special for the Integral PC. They allow you to change the font size once you have installed MemoMaker. You can choose either the smaller (6x8) or larger (7x11) dot font. The application is shipped with the (6x8) dot font as the default for the Integral PC. The fourth option allows you to make a backup copy of all the MemoMaker files on the application disc. If you install MemoMaker on a hard disc, we recommend that you specify a destination directory somewhere along your search path. When MemoMaker runs, it looks for its auxilliary files first in its own directory, then in any directory along your search path. This allows you to run MemoMaker no matter in what directory you are currently working.
